Missing the Point
I think some of the harsh critics of this book seem to be missing the point. The point of Babywise is not to get a child to sleep through the night at an early age but to be used as a strategy to ensure all his or her needs are met while developing permanent healthy sleeping habits. The "sleeping through the night at 8 weeks" is a great selling point but should not be the sole inspiration for choosing this method.

The idea behind this is that the parents direct the feedings by applying a loose-emphasis on loose- feeding/wake-time/sleep schedule. If the baby is hungry and giving you obvious cues, you should feed him or her. I used this on my son with some slight modifications (like not dropping out the middle of the night feeding until he dropped it himself). The schedule was never enforced by starving him out until his next meal but by waking him up to eat. His body naturally took to eating on a schedule, give or take 10 minutes but if he was hungry early, which happened on rare occasion, I fed him. The schedule ensured that he got enough to eat as well as helped my body regulate itself with milk production. Plus knowing roughly when they should eat is extremely helpful in assessing their needs. He didn't sleep through the night until he was 14 weeks old but that wasn't terribly important to me. He was tiny and needed to eat once in the night. What he did learn was to self-sooth and be able to fall asleep on his own in his bed.

My child was born early and left the hospital weighing only 5 and a half pounds. He has gained weight like a champ and is perfectly fat and healthy. Not to mention, he is the happiest baby I've ever known. He knows I love him. He's crazy about me. He feels secure and content. All his needs are met before he asks. He is a great napper and night time sleeper now. My husband is an M.D. and we both feel we made a good choice with Babywise. The key is that we are the parents and we assess our child's needs. A book or a clock will not be doing the parenting. They are merely an aid to us and our intuition. Babywise is not the only way but it has been great for us.

Buyer
The book had stains when I received it. Generally sellers indicate terms "like new" or "slightly used", they are correct. In this case the seller indicated the book was like new and it was not. We did receive the book in a timely manner, however.

On time and just what I expected.
Thanks for an easy transaction... was exactly what I expected. Would definitely buy again!

Why is it all the religious wackos love this book
This book is ridiculous. Ezzo's method's have been associated with severe dehydration and death in infants. Why is it so many of the 4-5 star reviews come from people with user names shouting their Christian ideals. Or that they got this book from church.

Why have a baby at all if you can't be bothered to pick it up and care for it.

Why is it that people go to jail for abusing pets this way but abusing an infant, no problem.

Not for the nursing mother
If you want to nurse your child this is not the book to follow--way too stringent and strict! You cannot follow these methods and be successful!

Amazon.com Review:
Theologian Gary Ezzo and pediatrician Dr. Robert Bucknam set off cries of alarm in their highly controversial 1995 publication On Becoming Baby Wise by arguing that some crying is natural and healthy for babies. In this updated edition, Ezzo and Bucknam present a comprehensive method to encourage a full night's sleep for the seven- to nine-week-old baby. It's easy to read, easy to follow, supported by research and by testimonials from parents and pediatricians, and includes suggestions for making the process fit into the reader's lifestyle. The authors believe a consistent sleep routine leads to happier, more responsible, and better-adjusted children. But a full night's sleep is just the short-term goal. The long-term goal is training parents to bring order and stability to their families through nurturing the marriage, providing a loving structure for one's children, and allowing flexibility in the process.

Twelve chapters cover feeding philosophies, monitoring baby's growth, establishing baby's routine, handling multiple births, and the ever-controversial chapter on when baby cries. The 52-week method involves four phases, beginning with "Stabilization" from birth to week 8. During weeks 9 through 15 ("Extended Night"), babies learn to sleep through the night. Ezzo and Bucknam attempt to teach the difference between a baby's many cries and advise parents on various responses to these cries. Critics dislike Ezzo's strong belief that "child-centered parenting" (feeding baby whenever it cries, sleeping with and "wearing" baby) fosters demanding, insecure toddlers. But for parents who are tired of being tired--or whose previous experience with child-centered parenting supports Ezzo's theory--it may be worth a read. --Liane Thomas
