Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five (Revised Edition)
Penelope Leach's Your Baby & Child has been a beloved favorite for years. With this new, revised edition, Leach has updated her information and approach to reflect new findings in the field of child development, and to respond to the changing needs of today's families. Leach has utter respect for children and their parents; she explains development, child care, and parenting concerns clearly and without condescension.
Each developmental stage--newborn, settled baby, older baby, toddler, and young child--is discussed in terms of feeding, teeth and teething, growing, excreting, crying, sleeping, playing, and everyday care. For each stage, an additional set of appropriate topics is discussed, including muscle power, speech, child care, and appropriate toys. Colorful and expressive photos display infant, childhood, and toddler behavior. With her common-sense, child-positive approach, Leach carefully dispels negative parenting attitudes, and teaches readers how to stop, listen, and learn from their children. --Ericka Lutz

A Storehouse of Knowledge
I share info from this book all the time with young moms who are my clients and are learning to be better, more educated parents. I find one can count on what is shared inside the cover. The child development info is written in an understandable, easy to grasp way. It's a sensible book. It should be required reading for all new parents and parents-to-be. One thing is certain, you will not regret purchasing this book. It's *THE* handbook on how to do it (bringing up baby) right from the start. Too bad every kid doesn't automatically come with this most helpful "owner's manual."

Excellent book on practical, loving parenting
Very good book written by an excellent source of parenting advice and suggestions, Penelope Leach. Leach gives parents confidence to care for their baby and young child, along with good information on child development. This is one of THE best childcare books on the market, I folded over and reread many pages and referenced this book quite a bit. Even if parents have other childcare books, or they're on their second or third child, they will find this book helpful and a good reference to have on hand. Generally friends of mine who've had this book say it's the main one they use and often give it as a shower/new baby gift.
To be helpful in describing Leach's practical parenting approach, I'll share a story she told on a TV show where the topic was parenting very young children. She talked about visiting a friend's house, sitting in their garden (she's British), while the friend's two year old kept going over and opening the gate. Leach's friend kept getting up and scolding the child and steering her away from the gate. After about the fifth time this happened, Leach said she told her friend "For goodness sakes, why not get a bit of string and just tie the gate shut?". Everyone in the TV audience broke into loud laughter and applause, almost in relief that the solution to the constant gate opening was so simple as tying the gate shut.
An overall excellent baby care book; even if parents have other childcare books this one will be a great addition.

Best baby book!
I used this book for my own child thirty years ago, and have just purchased copies for my daughter and her cousin, both of whom are expecting. It is a wonderful book, written from the perspective of the child, as opposed to the convenience of the parent. If you have just one baby book, this should be it!

great source for new parents..
I bought this book based upon a recommendation of my friend who is a mother of a 23 years old boy..
Considering hundreds of other books, websites, newsletters etc in this area, this book really the most reasonable one.. The approach of the author to the problems/ incidents are based on "real" reality. It's obvious that she ha raised children, too. Nothing I came across in the book was "theorical"..
I loved it and has been my first point of contact whenever there is a prob or have a curiosity..

Happy Baby = Happy Parents
This is the best book I've read on caring for your baby. It makes perfect sense: If your child is happy then you're happy. Likewise, if you're happy then your child is happy.
